During February 2025, 9 awards between £500–1000 were distributed to assist professional artists, craft makers and designers in their creative development.
James Coogan used his award to support a new body of Arctic-inspired work, developing his experience of marine science and oceanography at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), where he researched tidewater glaciers in the Arctic. James undertook material research, using clay and glaze to explore a tactile reflection on climate grief and ecological fragility. As an early career recipient, James aimed to refine sculptural techniques, experiment with glazes that examine environmental instability, and document his work for digital storytelling. The award assisted the sustainable growth of James’s practice, enabling development in climate-focused art.
"I’ve been extremely fortunate to realise a dream and explore the Arctic, but the experience was also heartbreaking and I’ve come out the other side with a passionate, artistic response. The melting is stark and visible year-on-year. So, making my art is a form of therapy and activism, and I’m very thankful for the support." - James Coogan
