Critical Friends: Sustaining International Working
In 2025, CHARTS hosted Critical Friends: Sustaining International Working, guided by Dr Deirdre MacKenna, featuring a panel of international artists in a roundtable discussion exploring the motivations and methods behind developing international collaborations. Speakers included Dr Kate Cowcher, Dr Dominicus Makukula, Adrien Howard, Martha Kazungu and KNOCKvologan Studio's Miek Zwamborn and Rutger Emmelkamp.
Speakers covered their methods for international working, including:
- How can artists sustain motivation to participate in international actions when working in coastal/island/rural locations?
- Artists’ approaches to making new connections in new territories and unknown networks.
- How artists can sustain international practices when unable to be physically present (e.g., maintaining and further building connections).
- How international working nudges artists’ practices forward.
- And methods for Inspiration/motivation/resilience.
Growing Global Networks Info Webinars
In October 2024 CHARTS hosted three Growing Global Networks Info Webinars, which introduced examples of international working and answered questions about our upcoming Call for Proposals to our Funded Micro-Projects. These webinars were designed to help support members to learn from others, strengthen their plans, connect them with professionals from beyond the UK and share their experience with the CHARTS community as part of our mentoring sessions.
CONNECT, presented examples of CHARTS members’ working internationally and connected members with opportunities to expand the contexts, communities and markets in which their work resonates. Featuring Norah Campbell, Head of Arts at British Council Scotland, and CHARTS members Naoko Mabon and Rutger Emmelkamp.
REACHING MARKETS, focused on the authentic processes and experiences which CHARTS members offer, whether to visitors to Argyll or exporting internationally, and looked at how members can implement/develop digital platforms/networks and work with the tourism sector as well as demonstrate the impact and value of our work through AI/digital-data. Featuring Nicola Henderson, Sector Specialist, Heritage XPO North, Cathy Craig, CEO of Argyll & the Isles Tourism Cooperative and Kate Davies, Designer and Creator of Kate Davies Designs (KDD).
PREPARING PROPOSALS was an open Q&A session which discussed the upcoming Funded-International-Micro-Projects and Mentoring Sessions, to support members gearing up for international work.
