Mairi Gillies

Gaelic

Tha Màiri NicIllÌosa na neach-ealain às a’ Ghalltachd, a tha a’ fuireach a-nis ann an Ùige Leòdhais. Tha an obair aice, na snaigheadaireachd gu tric, air a freumhachadh gu domhainn san ‘Àite’, agus i a’ rannsachadh dhòighean-sealltainn Gàidhlig agus nan càirdeasan eadar gnèithean, àiteachan agus cultar. Tha obair Màiri na gnìomhadh sèimh le lùth feimineach, air a cruthachadh leis an ìomhaigh Ghàidhealach aice. Le bhith an sàs ann an caochladh choimhearsnachdan Gàidhlig, thaisbeanaidhean agus amannan air mhuinntireas, tha i a’ cruthachadh cheanglaichean ri fearann, dùthchas, agus na daoine a chaidh roimhpe. Tha i cuideachd a’ ruith “Reothart nan Ealain” na ionad-ealain lèirsinneach Gàidhlig.

Tha Gàidhlig mar phàirt den dòigh sam bi mi a’ sealltainn air an t-saoghal agus tha i uime sin bunaiteach dhan chleachdadh chruthachail agam. Dhomhsa, is iad cultar is cànan na Gàidhlig na slighean gu tuigse dhùthchasach air ‘Àite’.” – Màiri NicIllÌosa

English

Mairi Gillies is a Gaelic artist from the Lowlands of Scotland, now living in Uig on the Isle of Lewis. Her work, often sculptural, is deeply rooted in the 'Place,' exploring Gaelic ways of seeing and the relationships between species, spaces, and culture. Mairi’s practice is a form of quiet activism with feminist energy, shaped by her Gael identity. Through her involvement in various Gaelic communities, exhibitions, and residencies, she fosters connections to the land, culture, and the people who have come before her. She also runs "Reothart nan Ealain," a Gaelic visual arts hub.

Gaelic forms part of the aperture through which I experience the world so is inherent to my creative practice. For me, Gaelic culture and language are the routes into our Indigenous understandings of 'Place'.” - Mairi Gillies
