Judy is a photographic and sound artist with twenty-four years of experience, focusing on the relationship between belonging, personal well-being, and the environment. Her work, often exploring language and cultural identity, has led to collaborations with Indigenous communities, Gaelic speakers, and environmental projects. Notable achievements include documenting the uprising that brought Evo Morales to power, an Arts Fellowship to Antarctica, and exhibitions for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Judy’s Gaelic-inspired projects, such as Freumhaichte and Dualchas and Rionnach Maoim, supported by CHARTS, foster conversations across cultures, highlighting the importance of language, identity, and the elemental nature of our wild spaces.

“I am interested in the science of how language affects our perception of the world and how indigenous language extinction is leading to loss of ecological knowledge. There is much to be learned from traditional cultures across the world, including from our own Gaelic traditions. Traditionally, communities were more embedded in the local environment, and engagement with the landscape became key to well-being. As growing scientific research now shows a strong link between time spent in nature and reduced depression, reduced stress and better physical health, there is much to be said for embracing our natural environments and traditional cultures.” - Judy Parrott
